Whether you are the victim just once or you are exposed to a prolonged period of sexual abuse, it is an intensely traumatic experience. Sexual abuse can happen to anyone at any stage of their life and doesn’t necessarily refer to rape or sexual assault. Being sent sexual images/messages against your will (known as sexting), being forced to have sex for money or as part of blackmail, being sexually harassed at work or being forced to take part in genital mutilation are all examples of sexual abuse. Unsurprisingly, the psychological impact of any sort of sexual abuse can be huge. It can make it difficult or impossible to form normal, loving relationships, cause anxiety and depression and lead to poor life choices to try and deal with the emotional effects of the abuse. Counseling has been proven to be an extremely effective therapy for sexual abuse survivors, helping you to process past emotions, release any negative feelings you have towards yourself and find healthy ways to move forward into your future.
